Former NFL quarterback Brett Favre has denied any wrongdoing in the Mississippi Welfare scandal that funneled millions out of the program. The Hall of Fame quarterback took it a step further and blamed the media for “smearing” him in response to his involvement with the investigation. This scandal was discovered after an audit showed that $77 million was funneled from the poorest in the state to the wealthiest and most well of residents of the state. Favre himself has not been charged but is a defendant in a civil lawsuit filed by the state.

In a statement published by Fox News Difgital, Brett Favre said the following: “I have been unjustly smeared in the media. I have done nothing wrong, and it is past time to set the record straight.” He continued with: “No one ever told me, and I did not know, that funds designated for welfare recipients were going to the University or me. I tried to help my alma mater USM, a public Mississippi state university, raise funds for a wellness center. My goal was and always will be to improve the athletic facilities at my university.”
This is what Favre is calling “setting the record straight and is his first official response to the allegations that broke earlier in the year. Legal proceedings and more investigations will follow and more truth will come to light. Six people have been arrested so far connected to this with five already pleading guilty. We here at Def Pen Sports will continue to update the story as more is learned.
