‘The Hitman’s Bodyguard’ reigned supreme amidst a historically bad box office weekend by bringing in an estimated $10 million. The weekend’s numbers represent the worst weekend at the domestic box office since 2001. Unfortunately, there are no major wide releases until ‘IT’ arrives in theatres on September 8th. Even though the box office overall has been terrible, we shouldn’t belittle what ‘The Hitman’s Bodyguard’ has been able to achieve. The film is not based on any famous IP, unless you consider the playful references to 1992’s ‘The Bodyguard’ as IP and is essentially a star driven project which rarely succeeds these days in Hollywood. It would not come as a shock to me if the studios start to look at pairing Reynolds, and Sam Jackson up again in the very near future. ‘Annabelle: Creation’ took the second spot with an estimated $7.3 million. The film has now grossed over $215 million worldwide on a budget of only $15 million. ‘Leap!’ debuted in the third spot over the weekend and brought in an estimated $5 million. ‘Leap!’ has already been in wide release overseas for over 8 months and brought in an impressive $86 million in the process. Finishing in the fourth spot was the indie darling ‘Wind River’. The film has been in release for several weeks but expanded wide this weekend and brought in an estimated $4.4 million in the process. This represents a 48.2% jump in revenue from week to week for ‘Wind River’. Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Logan Lucky’ rounded out the top 5 by bringing in an estimated $4.37 million. The numbers for ‘Logan Lucky’ are a total downer as the film is seriously entertaining but in this current landscape, I can’t say it’s much of a surprise.
