In one of the more disappointing box office weekends in recent memory, ‘Blade Runner 2049’ emerged victorious. The weekend was not disappointing due to ‘Blade Runner 2049‘ coming out on top, but because of how it managed to do so. The film is being universally lauded as a stunning visual achievement and an instant classic, but it only managed to bring in a little over $30 million in its opening frame domestically. While this number isn’t horrible when positioned next to the films rumored $200 million-plus budget it’s extremely disheartening. While the film is technically a sequel, it is everything audiences say they clamor for at the movies. Bold and breathtaking visuals mixed with a gripping story to boot. Nearly everyone who went to the film ended up appreciating at least one of the aforementioned aspects of the film seeing as the film holds an A- cinema score. The film managed to bring in an additional $50 million overseas which will help in the long run but it’s still a major uphill climb for ‘Blade Runner: 2049’. Hopefully, the film will receive some well-deserved acclaim come Oscar season that could prop up the box office even more. ‘The Mountain Between Us’ debuted in second place with an estimated $10.1 million. Rounding out the top 3 was the box office juggernaut ‘IT’ which brought an additional $9.9 million in its 5th week of release.
