The way it stands, Dombrowski is out, and Romero will be working with Brain O’Halloran and Zack Scott as the head executives for the Red Sox for the time being. There were reports of Dombrowski being on the “hot seat,” and the Red Sox are having a disappointing season after a World Series win. Dombrowski is a general manager who was built for a win-or-bust mentality, did not get the job done this year in the eyes of the organization.
The reality is, the Red Sox felt they should be in contention this season and they are struggling to get a Wildcard spot. The New York Yankees are running away with the division with an eight-game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays who hold one of the American League Wildcard spots. The Red Sox are eight games back of the Wildcard spot, and the organization felt that this was unacceptable for the team that Dombrowski put together with the returning pieces.
Dombrowski has made some moves as in extending David Price on a long term deal, dealing prospects (Yoan Moncada) for left-handed pitcher Chris Sale, and extending shortstop Xander Bogaerts for the long term. The point is, he came into the Red Sox organization after failing to win a World Series with the Detroit Tigers, and he tried to build a contender for multiple years, the Red Sox organization feels that his work was inadequate coming off of a championship year. Therefore he was relieved. On the “hot seat” or not, this move should still be shocking to the baseball world coming off of a season where the Red Sox were World Series Champions.
