Set to usher in a new era, the Cincinnati Bengals have kicked things off by placing the franchise tag on perhaps the most talented player on their roster. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Bengals have franchise-tagged veteran wide receiver A.J. Green.

Drafted by the Bengals back in 2011, A.J. Green has been one of the most dangerous deep threats since coming into the NFL. However, injuries have taken their toll over the past couple of seasons and the Bengals are clearly wary of handing him another long-term contract.
Still, it was necessary that the Bengals find a way to keep Green around at least for one more season. All indications point to the Bengals selecting LSU QB Joe Burrow with the top pick in this year’s draft. Though the Bengals have some depth at wideout with Tyler Boyd and John Ross, having a veteran like A.J. Green there for Burrow will be integral for his growth as a rookie.
