David Benavidez and Caleb Plant are set to meet at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday. Today, both men will meet at 3 p.m. EST for the final press conference before the big fight.
Plant enters the fight with a record of 22-1 with 13 knockouts. The Tennessee native upset José Uzcátegui in Los Angeles four years ago to claim his first super middleweight title. After claiming the title, Plant did not look back as he beat Vincent Feigenbutz, Mike Lee and Caleb Truax to retain his title. Ultimately, Saul Canelo Alvarez stopped Plant in the 11th round to claim the undisputed super middleweight title. After suffering the first loss of his professional career, he bounced back with a knockout victory against Anthony Dirrell in October. Now, he faces his longtime foe, David Benavidez.
David Benavidez will step into the ring with an unblemished record of 26 with 23 knockouts. Despite boasting an unblemished record, the 26-year-old has lost his super middleweight titles twice due to substance abuse issues and missing weight. In recent years, he has maintained a clean resumé with victories against Roamer Alexis Angulo, Ronald Ellis, Kyrone Davis and David Lemieux.
Benavidez and Plant will fight on March 25, 2023 in Las Vegas on Showtime Pay-Per-View. The winner will obtain the interim WBC Super Middleweight Championship and become the mandatory challenger for the full title held by Alvarez.
