Reboots are never easy. Ask the producers behind Coming 2 America or the team behind the updated version of The Twilight Zone. With that said, there are instances in which reboots can work. Creed has extended the life of the Rocky franchise for an additional six or seven years. More recently, Candyman returned and topped the box office. While “reboot” isn’t of a term used in music, it may apply to the return of AZ.
AZ popped back up in the mainstream limelight with a verse on “Full Circle” from the number one album, King’s Disease. One years later, he returned to announce the release of his second album, Do or Die. Nearly 12 years after delivering Legendary, the New York native started his album rollout by dropping “The Wheel” with Jaheim. Both AZ and Jaheim showed that they hadn’t really lost a step over the years.
“It’s known, on style alone, I can carry my own/Calm demeanor, dough with various tones/I raise hell, when ya future’s as fresh as ya sneakers you age well/From the beeper era of reefer puffers that make bail,” AZ raps.
For those who have had “The Wheel” in rotation over the last month or so, you’ll be happy to know that that Do or Die II has arrived. Complete with features from Lil’ Wayne, T-Pain, Dave East, Conway The Machine, Jaheim, Rick Ross and Idris Elba, the album provides a grand return for one of the best to ever come out of the big city.
