Let’s head back to the year 2018, shall we? The boxing world is abuzz with rumors of a potential heavyweight unification bout featuring Alabama upstart Deontay Wilder and Olympic medalist Anthony Joshua. While discussions of a potential fight hit a snag, there was hope the fight could be made in either late 2018 or early 2019. Unfortunately, everything fell apart. Wilder accepted a challenge from the once-retired Tyson Fury and fought to a draw. Months later, Jarrell “Big Baby” Miller was pulled from Joshua’s Madison Square Garden debut and replaced with Andy Ruiz. Ruiz ended up handing Joshua the first loss of his career and the rest is history. Nearly five years later, there is more hope than ever that a fight between the two could happen.
Earlier this week, multiple reports suggested that there were negotiations for a mega-fight doubleheader in Saudia Arabia. In this scenario, Tyson Fury would fight Oleksandr Usyk on the same night Deontay Wilder fights Anthony Joshua. Fight fans can be gullible in certain instances, but no one appeared to truly believe in these reports. Just a few days later, it appears that they may be picking up steam.
Within the last three days, Fury has said that he will be making a major announcement soon, Wilder’s manager said that his client would be willing to fight Joshua and now, Joshua is directly addressing the idea of a two-fight doubleheader.
“Have you ever heard of anything like that before? Two heavyweight clashes on the same night,” Joshua said, according to Sky Sports.
“The rumors that are circulating, there might be some truth behind it.”
Nothing has been confirmed, but Joshua’s words may be enough to get the boxing public ready for fight night.
