Nearly a year ago, Alycia Baumgardner shocked many fans when she stopped Terri Harper in the fourth round to win the WBC and IBO Super Featherweight Championships. This weekend, she believes she’ll shock even more fans when she steps into the ring with unified Super Featherweight Champion Mikaela Mayer. During a recent interview with Sky Sports, Baumgardner previewed the fight in a simple, yet firm tone.
“Are you confident enough to give us a prediction on how you see this fight going?” the off-camera journalist asked.
“Honestly, I see this fight…I see the [referee] stopping it. I see the [referee] stopping it or she’s walking into a punch. There’s no other option in my mind but to get Mikaela out of there. I have so much to prove,” Baumgardner answered.
Baumgardner is not the only person confident they’ll win on Saturday. Her opponent, Mikaela Mayer, is equally convinced that she’ll beat her rival at the O2 Arena this weekend.
“I think she’ll be a really good boxer one day, a more well-rounded boxer, but she’s not well-rounded enough yet,” Mayer said about Baumgardner.
“I’m going to take her into those uncomfortable spaces, and I don’t believe she’ll know how to handle it.”
One woman will emerge with all of the belts on Saturday and one woman will head back to the drawing board. The main card is set to air on ESPN+ on October 15, 2022 at 2:30 p.m. EST.
