Alex Garland, the director of ‘Ex Machina‘ has just dropped the trailer for his next project. ‘Annihilation’ is based on the first book in the best-selling ‘Southern Reach‘ trilogy. From the look of the trailer, the film certainly retains the lived in sci-fi tone that was found throughout ‘Ex Machina’, though this film does look like it will veer slightly more into the sci-fi fantasy realm. The film also looks like it will feature a nice blend of horror in the mix as well. Sci-Fi horror is a genre that rarely receives attention from big-budget Hollywood films. Hopefully, if the film is successful we could see a resurgence of the genre as a whole. The film bolsters an all-star cast that features Natalie Portman, Tessa Thompson, Gina Rodriguez and Oscar Issac.
We’ve attached the full synopsis and trailer for ‘Annihilation’ below.
‘The book describes a team of four women (a biologist, an anthropologist, a psychologist, and a surveyor) who set out into an area known as Area X. The area is abandoned and cut off from the rest of civilization. They are the 12th expedition. The other expeditions have been fraught with disappearances, suicides, aggressive cancers, and mental trauma.’ Via Farrar, Straus and Giroux
