The Philadelphia 76ers reportedly made an attempt at acquiring German point guard Dennis Schroder from the Atlanta Hawks prior to the trade deadline, but the Hawks turned them down.
From Philly.com’s Keith Pompey:
The team offered packages that included some combination of shooting guard Nik Stauskas, point guard Ish Smith, a player with an expiring guaranteed contract and a 2016 first-round pick to the Atlanta Hawks for point guard Dennis Schroder, according to multiple league sources.
Former Sixer JaKarr Sampson was said to be player with the expiring contract in the deal. According to NBA rules, Smith could not have been part of a multi-player deal since he had been acquired by the Sixers fewer than 60 days before. But he could have been traded alone in a second deal.
The main issue for the Hawks, says Pompey, was that they were uncertain whether or not Ish Smith would re-sign with them in the Summer. Smith, who has averaged 14.6 points and 7.6 assists per game since being traded to Philadelphia, is expected to have many suitors this offseason.
Pompey didn’t say which 1st-round pick was being offered, but it’s hard to imagine it was Philadelphia’s 2016 pick, given that Atlanta turned them down.
The talks for Schroder are over for now, but may continue, says Pompey:
Atlanta ultimately decided to keep Schroder, their standout backup. However, a source expects the Sixers and Hawks to revisit trade talks for him during the NBA draft on June 23.
Schroder is signed to the end of the 2016-17 season. The Hawks have the option to offer him a qualifying offer for $3.8 million in 2017-18. A source said that the Sixers are prepared to sign him a maximum-salary deal.
Wait, what? A max deal? For Dennis Schroder? Even with the rising cap, Schroder isn’t worth the max. He has been quite good this year(11.2 points, 4.7 assists in 21 minutes per game) but that isn’t max money worthy. Personally, I feel that a player needs to prove that he’s capable of being a legitimate starter(i.e. play more than 21 minutes per game) before receiving a max deal. I don’t know about this one, Sixers.
