Nearly fifty years ago, a party was held at Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx. Little did DJ Kool Herc and several others know, the party held in the recreation room that evening would change the trajectory of music, culture and much more. In short, it is widely recognized as the night Hip-Hop was born.
As the culture’s 50th birthday nears, the Recording Academy has crafted a multi-layered celebration for the 65th Annual Grammy Awards. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Public Enemy, Run DMC, Queen Latifah, Grandmaster Flash, Rakim, Grandmaster Mele Mel and many other pioneers are set to take the stage at Crypto.com Arena on Sunday. Also, contemporary artists like DJ Drama, Lil’ Wayne, Future, Glorilla and Lil’ Baby are also set to take part in Sunday’s celebration.
“For five decades, hip-hop has not only been a defining force in music, but a major influence on our culture,” Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. said.
“Its contributions to art, fashion, sport, politics and society cannot be overstated. I’m so proud that we are honoring it in such a spectacular way on the Grammy stage. It is just the beginning of our yearlong celebration of this essential genre of music.”
Not to be forgotten, Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter is set to perform alongside DJ Khaled on Sunday evening. Hosted by Trevor Noah, the awards ceremony will air live on Sunday, February 5 at 7 p.m.
