Since the news of the Fox/Disney Merger broke back in 2017, Marvel fans have not-so-patiently waiting to see the X-Men and Avengers cross paths on the big screen. Now that both The Avengers and X-Men franchises reached the end of their overarching stories many assumed a mashup was next on deck. Unfortunately, though, it seems like that’s not the case.
While speaking with Fandango this week, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige revealed that he’s playing it kind of slow with mutants and Marvel’s first family. “It’s still early days, but it’s been a fun exercise, and it’s one, by the way, that we’ve been doing for years. Every development meeting starts with cool ideas and fun ideas, and our wheels are always turning in terms of what if… to use a Marvel publishing term.”
“What if we did this? What if we did that? What if we had access to such and such characters? That’s how Spider-Man: Homecoming came together in the first place,” Feige continued. “And it’s fun to now be in this position with the Fox characters, too, because if we come up with a great ‘What If’ we can actually do it.”
So, it seems like we’re still a few years off the X-Men/Avengers showdown of our dreams. I doubt Feige would say it outright but this decision likely has a lot to do with the disappointing return on the last few X-Men movies. (Dark Phoenix posted the worst opening in the franchise.) Marvel is probably waiting for the botched execution of those last few X-Men movies to fade a bit in everyone’s memories before starting over.
