The X-Men franchise for Fox has had its highs and lows.
The Highs: ‘Logan’, ‘X-Men: First Class’, ‘X-Men: Days Of Future Past’.
The Lows: ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’, ‘X-Men 2’, ‘The Wolverine’.
And now, ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’. In what was meant to be the finale of the superhero franchise with 20th Century Fox, has fallen extremely short of expectations and has become the worst opening weekend in X-Men history.
‘Dark Phoenix’ is on pace to make $34 million in its opening weekend, which makes it $19 short of tying the lowest recorded opening weekend in X-men history ‘The Wolverine’ in 2013.
The movie also hasn’t had the best reviews with Rotten Tomatoes rating it 20%. To put it into perspective, ‘The Secret Life of Pets 2’ beat the movie this weekend, making $46.1 million.
I don’t think Fox is necessarily worried. On June 21st, they will release ‘Toy Story 4’ and they should recoup a lot of that money.
