Not a lot of people thought the Golden State Warriors season would end in heartbreak, but it did. After losing in Game 7 of the NBA Finals, the Warriors now have to mourn about their loss and turn their attention to their future. This offseason may be the biggest summer in terms of free agency because of one player, Kevin Durant. Durant’s value is something not a lot of teams could pass up on, especially with the salary cap rising and you can bet the Warriors will spend their time hunting for the former League MVP.
Marc Stein of ESPN, who spoke to Joe Lacob, Golden State Warriors owner, said that despite the Warriors staff and players mourning their loss now, their attentions have been turned to one thing; courting Kevin Durant to sign in Oakland:
“All I can say,” Lacob offered on his way out of the building Sunday night, “is that I will be very aggressive.”
Translation: KD Recruiting Season starts at the first allowable minute.
There will surely be other prominent targets, via signings or trades, whose names are not yet known but will emerge soon. Golden State is a destination now, something the Warriors know and plan to exploit.
“Big-game hunting” is the phrase you constantly hear in team circles.
Big-game hunting sounds like a really bad arcade game, but from what it looks like that’s not what the Warriors mean by the hunting they’re going to be doing. I can’t even fathom a team that has Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Kevin Durant on the starting lineup, would they ever miss? With free agency starting in 11 days, you can bet that Bob Myers and Joe Lacob will be calling Durant’s cellphone at 12:01 am on July 1st.
