On February 4, 2024, it happened. With Trevor Noah hosting, Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus in attendance, and millions watching around the world, the voters of The Recording Academy awarded Victoria Monét the golden gramophone for Best New Artist, Best R&B Album for Jaguar II, and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical. In addition, her daughter, Hazel, became one of the youngest GRAMMY Award nominees in history for her contributions on Jaguar II‘s “Hollywood.” For Monét, her creative counterparts and her loved ones, these victories weren’t just about winning on one of music’s biggest nights; it was a culmination of a 15-year journey.
“This award was a 15-year pursuit,” Monét said while accepting the GRAMMY Award for Best New Artist. “I moved to LA in 2009, and I like to liken myself to a plant, who was planted, and you can look at the music industry as soil. It can be looked at as dirty, or it can be looked at as a source of nutrients and water. My roots have been growing underneath ground, unseen for so long. I feel like today, I’m sprouting, finally above ground.”
To some, she is the songwriter and performer behind the chart-topping hit, “On My Momma.” But to those who know her story, Monét is a dynamic force who has seen the ups and downs in music as a songwriter with superstars like Ariana Grande, Chlöe Bailey, Halle Bailey, and several others. Now, two years removed from that night in Los Angeles, Victoria Monét is ready to go again. Following the release of Jaguar II, she has announced her new project, Frequency of Love. Set for release in October, the LP will feature production from D’Mile and Kaytranda. Prepping her fans for what’s next, she’s shared her new single, “Reach Out.”
