Idris Elba has taken on a number of interesting roles over the years, including a drug dealer in Baltimore and a babysitter turned DJ in Europe. Now, he finds himself in somewhat unfamiliar territory. In MGM’s newest picture, Three Thousand Years of Longing, Elba takes on the role of a genie seeking his freedom on a wild ride that feels like a bad trip at times.
“Dr Alithea Binnie, [played by Tilda Swinton], is an academic – content with life and a creature of reason. While in Istanbul attending a conference, she happens to encounter a Djinn, [played by Idris Elba], who offers her three wishes in exchange for his freedom. This presents two problems. First, she doubts that he is real and second, because she is a scholar of story and mythology, she knows all the cautionary tales of wishes gone wrong,” the film’s description reads.
George Miller’s latest film promises to be an adventure. Check out the trailer below before the film hits theater this summer.
