Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye and his XO Humanitarian Fund have donated $2.5 million to the United Nations World Food Programme’s humanitarian response efforts in Gaza. According to the humanitarian organization, the platinum recording artist’s donation is equivalent to 820 metric tons of food parcels or four million emergency meals.
“This conflict has unleashed a humanitarian catastrophe beyond reckoning. WFP is working round the clock to provide aid in Gaza but a major scale-up is needed to address the desperate level of hunger we are seeing. Our teams need safe and sustained humanitarian access, and continued support from donors to reach as many people as we can,” Corinne Fleischer of the United Nations World Food Programme said.
“We thank Abel for this valuable contribution towards the people of Palestine. We hope others will follow Abel’s example and support our efforts.”
Tefsaye’s contributions arrive as the United Nations World Food Programme works to provide assistance to those suffering from food insecurity and starvation in Gaza. The global humanitarian organization is currently supplying those in the region with fresh bread, fortified date bars, canned food, wheat flour, pasta, tomato paste and oil. Thus far, the World Food Programme, in conjunction with other agencies within the United Nations, have provided more than 764,000 Palestinians with meal assistance.
