Many Palestinian civilians in Gaza have struggled to survive due to a lack of necessities in the area, including food, medicine and water. As recent attacks in and around the area have escalated, accessing these necessities has become increasingly difficult. Most notably, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) informed the world that two million people were without clean water and civilians had been forced to use contaminated liquids instead.
“It has become a matter of life and death. It is a must; fuel needs to be delivered now into Gaza to make water available for [two] million people,” UNRWA Commissioner Philippe Lazzarini said.
As the crisis continues, President Joe Biden says he has reached an agreement to deliver “20 trucks of humanitarian aid into Gaza at the Rafah border crossing.” However, it is unclear what types of aid those trucks would carry or at what point during the 48-hour period they’d arrive.
“We absolutely need to have these trucks moving as quickly as possible and as many as necessary,” United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said.
“We are not looking for a win. We are looking for convoys to be authorized in meaningful numbers [and for] trucks to go every day into Gaza to provide enough support to the Gazan people.”
