One week ago, the AFP News Agency reported that members of the United States government prevented the United Nations Security Council from releasing a statement calling for a ceasefire in Israel. At that point, nearly 200 Palestinians had died, including 58 children. After an 11-day period of increased violence in the area, it appears that the United Nations Security Council has put forth another statement.
The United Nations Security Council has publicly backed the call for aid to communities in Palestine. Following an 11-day period of increased violence in the area, the UN Security Council is emphasizing the “immediate need for humanitarian assistance” in the area.
“The members of the Security Council stressed the immediate need for humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian civilian population, particularly in Gaza, and supported the Secretary General’s call for the international community to work with the United Nations on developing an integrated, robust package of support for a swift, sustainable reconstruction and recovery,” the United Nations Security Council wrote in a brief statement.
In addition to calling for humanitarian assistance, the organization says that it is committed to working with world leaders to create an “integrated, robust package” for those in the area. Through these efforts, the UN Security Council believes that it will help lead toward a “swift, sustainable reconstruction and recovery.”
