Coming to a screen near you this month, director Tim Story is set to deliver The Blackening. Co-written by Tracy Oliver of Girls Trip and Dewayne Perkins of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Story’s latest project fuses social commentary, comedy, horror and much more into a visual release.
“The Blackening centers around a group of Black friends who reunite for a Juneteenth weekend getaway only to find themselves trapped in a remote cabin with a twisted killer. Forced to play by his rules, the friends soon realize this ain’t no motherfu**in’ game,” the film’s synopsis reads.
Story, Oliver and Perkins have enlisted a star-studded cast that includes Grace Byers, Jermaine Fowler, Melvin Gregg, X Mayo, Dewayne Perkins, Antoinette Robertson, Sinqua Walls, with Jay Pharoah, and Yvonne Orji to lead the way. The Blackening is set to debut at the historic Apollo Theater on June 13, 2023 during the Tribeca Film Festival. Days later, it will arrive in theaters around the country for a Juneteenth Weekend wide release. As we wait for the holiday weekend to roll around, check out the trailer from Lionsgate below.
