A lot can change in five years. New artists can emerge, records labels can fall and streaming landscapes can transform. However, Syd’s ability to make timeless, endearing music has not change since she released Fin in 2017. Back with a new album called Broken Hearts Club, Sad has reemerged as one of the most consistent, talented singers in R&B and beyond. Her latest effort includes contributions from other innovative voices like Kehlani, Lucky Daye and Smino.
“The album is about a relationship I had that ended in my first real broken heart,” Syd shared in a statement, according to Pitchfork.
“It almost felt like I joined a club because all of my friends went through similar experiences. It was like a rite of passage. I started writing the album on the relationship when I was in love. You’re really getting the whole journey from the beginning to the end. I want people to find it beautiful. It’s super vulnerable, sentimental, and it’s soft. There’s touching moments and a couple of dark moments.”
