Marvel fans have had quite a tough week. After Spider-Man: Far From Home smashed the summer box office, Peter Parker seemed poised to take over as the new face of the MCU. However, due to Sony and Disney’s inability to play nice and make a new deal regarding the character, he has been pulled from the MCU.
Most fans assumed that this was a move by either side to drum up buzz around the character. With Disney’s D23 Expo happening over the weekend and Far From Home getting a theatrical re-release next week, it seemed like a miraculous 11th-hour deal would be announced at D23. That deal never came though and by all indications, Spider-Man has left the MCU for good.
Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige basically confirmed as much over the weekend as well. While speaking with EW at the D23 Expo, he shared his thoughts on the character’s time with Marvel Studios:
“I’m feeling about Spider-Man, gratitude and joy. We got to make five films within the MCU with Spider-Man: two standalone films and three with The Avengers. It was a dream that I never thought would happen. It was never meant to last forever. We knew there was a finite amount of time that we’d be able to do this, and we told the story we wanted to tell, and I’ll always be thankful for that.”
Tom Holland was on hand with EW as well, offering his own outlook on the situation. He reassured fans that he’d continue to play the web-slinger and gave a trepidatiously hopeful statement regarding Spidey’s future:
“The future for Spider-Man will be different, but it will be equally as awesome and amazing, and we’ll find new ways to make it even cooler.”
Spider-Man: Far From Home is re-releasing in theaters with additional footage on August 29th.
