Tom Hardy will be returning to the superhero world, but this time he will not be squaring off against Batman. Instead, Sony in their attempts to revive their superhero rights to the Spider-man universe, have casted Tom Hardy as the anti-hero Eddie Brock, also known as Venom.
Venom has quickly become one of the most popular Spider-man villains in the Marvel Comics since being introduced in 1988 and in 2018 we will finally see it come to life through Hardy. Venom is an alien symbiotes that needs a human host to survive and attached himself to Eddie Brock. Over the last decade, Hardy has quickly become one of the most sought of actors in Hollywood and casting him to be one of the main characters in the Sony superhero universe could prove to be big for them.
For Sony, this means there is a chance that they can revive their Spider-man franchise after failed attempts of bringing the web-slinging superhero to life in the Amazing Spider-man 1 & 2. This could be the basis for an entire universe for Sony and with the production of a Black Cat and Silver Sable movie also along the way, they could be slowly developing a proper superhero world at Sony. Although they’ve begun their collaboration with Marvel for Spider-man: Homecoming (slated for early July this year), this will be a stand-alone universe for Sony Pictures.
Nonetheless, I won’t be quick to judge the situation as Venom is slated to start production in Fall and release sometime in 2018, so there is still sometime for this movie to move in any certain direction. However, with Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer set to direct and Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinker (Amazing Spider-man 2) writing the script, the movie has already set high expectations.
