The National Basketball Association (NBA) could be the next North American sports league to call Las Vegas home. During a recent conversation with Pat McAfee, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said Las Vegas is a “candidate” to host a franchise if the league is to expand yet again.
“We want to figure out what our media relationships are going to look like, but then we will turn to expansion,” Silver said.
Sin City is no stranger to hoops. In recent years, the city has welcomed the NBA In-Season Tournament, NBA All-Star Weekend, NCAA Division 1 Men’s Basketball Tournament games and the Las Vegas Aces of the WNBA. Not to be forgotten, the city also hosts an NHL franchise and an NFL franchise. To top it all off, the NBA’s biggest star, LeBron James, has also said that he hopes to own a team in Las Vegas after he retires.
“I wanna own a team. Yeah, I wanna buy a team, for sure. I want a team in Vegas,” he said in June 2022.
“Speaking it into existence!”
As Silver said, the league will prioritize sorting out its media partnerships in 2024 and early 2025, but the possibility of expansion looms as the league looks toward the back half of the decade.
