Shy Glizzy has long been a staple in the nation’s capital and this week proves no different as he donates $10,000 to Martha’s Table. The donation is being used to fight food insecurity in the Washington, D.C. area during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Martha’s Table is a non-profit organization in Chocolate City that works to provide wellness resources, quality education and improve family engagement.
“At Martha’s Table, we believe every child, regardless of zip code, should have the opportunity to thrive,” the non-profit writes.
“We recognize that the neighborhood a child grows up in greatly impacts their access to resources, support, and chances for future success,” they add.
Food insecurity continues to be side effect of the pandemic. The United Nations World Food Program estimates that the virus will leave 265 million people suffering from food insecurity. Furthermore, the Global Report on Food Crisis illustrates the intricacies of this issue as it pertains to the pandemic.
“The 55 countries and territories that are home to 135 million acutely food-insecure people in need of urgent humanitarian food and nutrition assistance are the most vulnerable to the consequences of this pandemic as they have very limited or no capacity to cope with either the health or socioeconomic aspects of the shock,” the report indicates.
To fight this issues, a number of organizations and individuals have donated to food banks and other non-profits. Rachel Ray, George Clooney, Amal Clooney and a number of other celebrities have donated to the fight against food insecurity.
