Two of the more well-known coaches in the sport of college basketball just recently returned from Covid-19 isolation periods. Shaka Smart and Fred Hoiberg both just returned to the sideline after sitting out some games after positive tests. Smart and Hoiberg both suffered from severe symptoms which is scary even more so in Hoiberg’s case after his previous heart issues. He has undergone two different open-heart surgeries.
Hoiberg experienced just about every symptom including losing his sense of smell and feeling extremely fatigued. Even in his return, neither of those symptoms has subsided. The good news is all tests on his heart came back with positive results in terms of it not being affected by the virus.
Fred Hoiberg opened up about his battle with COVID-19 today during a media appearance.
"I got a little scared to be honest with you."
Appreciate Fred's honesty. He gave really good insight on how dangerous this virus is. https://t.co/Wlzo5LnOy1 #Huskers #Nebrasketball pic.twitter.com/KA7XQSSLJw

Shaka Smart always known as the “young coach” since he busted on the scene ten years ago also suffered severe symptoms. He didn’t expound on what exactly those symptoms were when he returned to his first media appearance since leaving isolation. It sounds like he is feeling much better although without going into much detail about symptoms it’s tough to know whether he’s still dealing with anything. This virus hits everyone differently but it’s been interesting to watch two high-profile coaches both announce they dealt with severe symptoms.
