
Dana “Queen Latifah” Owens and Eric “Jamie Foxx” Bishop have signed on to executive produce Mahalia starring Jill Scott. The film will tell the life story of activist and singer Mahalia Jackson.
“This is such an incredibly important story to tell and we’re thrilled to work with Jamie on the project,” Latifah said.
“Shakim and I are also looking forward to reteaming with our ‘Clark Sisters’ producing partner, Holly Carter, to share Mahalia’s inspiring journey to becoming the queen of Gospel music,” she added.
In addition, Shakim Compere and Holly Carter will Foxx and Latifah as producers.
“I am beyond grateful to partner with Latifah and Shakim again and equally excited that Jamie has joined the team. Much like ‘The Clark Sisters,’ ‘Mahalia!’ is another epic story of faith that is driven by powerful and uplifting music,” Carter stated.
Scott has previously starred in Why Did I Get Married, The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency and Get On Up. Now, she will take on the role of Jackson. Throughout the movie, Scott will double as a best-selling singer while undertaking social justice work with Martin Luther King Jr., John F. Kennedy and many others.
