Former Minneapolis Police Department Officer Derek Chauvin has been found guilty of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. In the immediate aftermath of his conviction, former President Barack Obama, former First Lady Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey and several others have offered their thoughts about the verdict. Adding to the commentary, Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden have issued public statements regarding the recent conviction.
“No one should be above the law. Today’s verdict sends that message, but it is not enough. We can’t stop here. In order to deliver real change and reform, we can and we must do more to reduce the likelihood that tragedies like this ever occur,” Biden stated.
“Black Americans and Black men, in particular, have been treated throughout the course of our country as less than human. Black men are fathers, brothers and sons. Their lives must be valued. We’re all a part of George Floyd’s legacy & our job now is to honor it,” the Vice President added.
President Joe Biden has also spoken to the Floyds multiple times this week. At this time, it is unclear if the President will meet with the family following the verdict.
