Who ya gonna call? According to Variety, it’s gonna be Paul Rudd. The Ant-Man and Wet Hot American Summer actor is in final negotiations with Sony to join Jason Reitman’s Ghostbusters sequel.
It was announced earlier this year that Reitman, whose father Ivan directed the original film, would be at the helm of a new Ghostbusters film. The newest installment, written by Reitman and Gil Kenan, will reportedly ignore 2016’s all-female reboot and instead be set in the original Ghostbusters universe.
“I’ve been wanting to work with Paul Rudd since my short film opened for Wet Hot American Summer at Sundance. I’m thrilled he’ll be joining this new chapter in the original Ghostbusters universe,” Reitman said regarding Rudd’s casting. Carrie Coon and Finn Wolfhard are also in talks to join the sequel along with Gifted star Mackenzie Grace.
Sony has remained pretty tight-lipped on what to expect from the newest Ghostbusters. But, it’s rumored that Coon and Wolfhard would play a single mother and her son who deal with a supernatural force that needs bustin’. Bill Murray recently voiced his willingness to return to the franchise but nothing has been made official. There are also rumors swirling that Sigourney Weaver may appear in the film but, again, Sony is keeping most everything under wraps for now.
Production on Ghostbusters is expected to begin later this summer. The film is slated for release on July 10th, 2020.
