Forty-three after its initial release at Paramount Pictures, Paramount+ has begun developing a Grease prequel series called Rise of the Pink Ladies. Set four years before the events of the hit film, Rise of the Pink Ladies tells the story of four students push the boundaries of Rydell High and change the school forever. Annabel Oakes will work as the showrunner as Marty Bowen and Erik Feig lead as executive producers. Thus far, no casting decisions have been shared with the public.
This is not the first time that Grease was given a 21st century makeover. In 2016, Julianne Hough and Vanessa Hudgens led a live performance of the classic musical. It went on to achieve critical acclaim and win five EMMY Awards.
Paramount+ has never been shied away from reboots, prequels and spinoffs. In recent months, the streaming platform has worked on prequels, reboots and spinoffs of the following projects: Star Trek, Flashdance, Love Story and The Italian Job.
