Nicki Minaj will add another piece of hardware to her trophy case this summer. MTV has announced that Minaj will receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award during the 2022 MTV VMAs.
“Nicki has broken barriers for women in hip-hop with her versatility and creative artistry,” Bruce Gillmer of Paramount+ said.
“She has shifted the music industry and cemented her status as a global superstar with her crossover appeal, genre-defying style and continuing to be unapologetically ‘Nicki’.”
The New York native is no stranger to the MTV VMAs stage. In 2011, she won her first Moon Person in the “Best Hip-Hop Video” category. Since then, she’s gone on to pick up 16 additional nominations and four more Moon People.
Beyond her appearances as both a nominee and an award winner, she has also performed at the MTV VMAs several times. In 2012, she made her performance debut alongside Alicia Keys as they brought “Girl On Fire” to life. Two years later, she performed “Bang Bang” with Ariana Grande, “Anacoda” from Pinkprint and “She Came To Give It To U” alongside Usher. Most recently, she returned to the MTV VMAs to rap a medley of records from her latest album, Queen.
Nicki Minaj will return to the MTV VMAs yet again to receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award on August 28, 2022 in Newark, New Jersey.
