So, November may’ve been the month with Netflix’s highest-profile Oscar-hopefuls in The King and The Irishman but, don’t count December’s original films out yet. But, before we get to those, the month kicks off with the third season of Ingobernable, the company’s popular Spanish political thriller. Then, on the 5th, Netflix gets the holidays kicked off with two Christmas-themed originals; A Christmas Prince: The Royal Baby, the third film in Rose McIver’s Christmas trilogy, and the first season of the Dutch series, Home for Christmas. Then, rounding out the first week of the month, one of those Oscar-hopefuls drops in the form of Marriage Story, Noah Bambauch’s raw, emotional examination of divorce starring Scarlett Johannson and Adam Driver.
Also dropping on the 6th is the first season of a new sketch comedy show, Astronomy Club and the second season of Netflix’s magic docuseries, Magic for Humans. After that, nothing drops until a week later when another Netflix original film, 6 Underground, lands on the 13th. It’s not the Oscar bait that a lot of the other high-profile releases are but its certainly going to be a good time. The Michael Bay-directed film stars Ryan Reynolds as the billionaire leader of a group of vigilantes who want to erase their past while securing the future of everyone else.
A few days later, on the 17th, Ronny Chieng, one of the stars of Crazy Rich Asians and a senior correspondent for The Daily Show releases his stand-up special, Asian Comedian Destroys America!. Next up, on the 20th, the second part of Netflix’s major December Oscar push comes in the form of The Two Popes. Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce star in the film as Pope Benedict and Pope Francis respectively as the two men work to find common ground on the future of the Catholic Church despite vastly different views. Also dropping on the 20th is Netflix’s live-action adaptation of The Witcher. Based on showrunner Lauren Hissrich’s recent comments, the series could go for at least seven seasons. So, fantasy fans, be sure to show out if you want to see more of this one.
Rounding out the month (and year), we’ve got season 2 of the popular sci-fi series Lost in Space hitting the service on Christmas Eve. Then a couple of days later on the 26th, we’ll get the second season of the former Lifetime Original, You that sees Joe head west and set his sights on a new “woman of his dreams.” The next day, Kevin Hart returns to our lives with Don’t F*ck This Up, his latest stand-up special. Also dropping on the 27th is a very interesting supernatural Turkis drama called The Gift. From there, The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.: Reawakened, a revival of a popular anime, drops on the 30th. And the 31st sees the release of Ares, a new Dutch series dealing with the supernatural, as well as the first season of Spectros, a Portuguese thriller.
