On Monday, January 20, 2025, the United States of America will celebrate the life and legacy of the late, great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. However, his son, Martin Luther King III, does not believe the Civil Rights icon would be proud of the nation’s current state of affairs.
“He’d be quite disappointed, quite frankly, that we are where we are,” King III told NBC’s Meet The Press on Sunday, January 19.
“Probably wouldn’t be surprised, but he certainly would be disappointed because he always infused energy that was positive, bringing out the best of who we as Americans are.”
Still, King III remains optimistic about what the country can achieve moving forward. As he explains, King III feels the nations needs to “exhibit the behavior that we exhibit in tragedy universally, all the time.”
King III’s comments arrive on the eve of the Inauguration of President-Elect Donald Trump, a political figure he and many others remain critical of. However, King III hopes the President will be more of a unifying force, open to “be in dialogue with everybody.”
“If you really want to bring the nation together so that it is the manifestation of what we call ourselves, the United States of America,” he continued.
“We’re not reflective of the United States of America right this moment, in my judgment.”
