On Wednesday, March 8, 2023, members of the Michigan House of Representatives passed the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act by a vote of 64-45. If signed into law by Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, the act would make it illegal for someone to fire or evict someone based on their sexual orientation.
“Every Michigander deserves to be treated with dignity and respect under the law. I’ve been calling for changes to the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act to strengthen legal protections for our LGBTQ+ community for years, and I am proud that we are finally getting it done,” Whitmer said.
“Amending Elliott-Larsen will help ensure Michiganders can’t be fired from their job or evicted from their home based on who they love or how they identify. This is about doing the right thing, and it is just good economics. Bigotry is bad for business, and ensuring these protections will build on our reputation as a beacon of opportunity where anyone can succeed.”
The act will move from the Michigan House of Representatives to the Michigan Senate. If it is passed by the Senate, it will move to the desk of Gretchen Whitmer.
On #IWD2023, I'm celebrating trans women who have continuously led the way, despite constant threats to their lives and liberty.
I'm proud that we’re finally in a position to expand the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act to protect LGBTQ+ Michiganders. Let's get it done!
