After 23 years Mike Brey has decided to retire at the end of the season and will go down as the all-time winningest head coach in Notre Dame history. The program had taken a downturn in recent years after a strong run throughout the 2010s. After making the tournament last season, Notre Dame is one and seven in ACC play so far. There were rumors his tenure may be headed in a direction similar to this whether by his own doing or the school’s before last season’s tournament appearance, their first in five seasons.
Brey will go down as one of the more beloved figures in college basketball, especially so of this era. His carefree nature and fun brand of basketball have always been what he’s been most known for, especially over the last decade. His back-to-back Elite Eight appearances in 2015-2016 were the highlights of his tenure and those Jerian Grant and Pat Connaughton-led teams were by far the best run of teams he had.

Brey was mentored and worked under Mike Krzyzewski for eight seasons at Duke before moving on to Delaware for his first head coaching job. After a run of five successful seasons there, he moved on to Notre Dame where he’s been since 2000 where he made 13 tournament appearances. Brey not being on the sideline at Notre Dame will be odd to see come next year but it was quite the run in the end.
