Miguel Berchelt has announced that he will move to lightweight following his knockout loss to Oscar Valdez in February. At 135 pounds, Berchelt believes he can compete with the division’s best like Vasiliy Lomachenko.
“I did a lot of great things at 130, and I think it’s time to go up to 135,” Berchelt told Boxing Social.
“There’s a lot of great opponents like Lomachenko.”
Since enduring the second loss of his career, Berchelt has made changes to his corner. Recently, he announced that he will work with Jorge Capetillo. Capetillo has worked with heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, former junior featherweight titlist Jessie Magdaleon and several other champions.
“I feel super good, I feel super confident with my new trainer, and I feel I have all the capability of doing a great fight and becoming a champion in the lightweight division,” Berchelt added.
“I’ve been inactive a year. I expect to get one or two fights in late February or March. And then after those one or two fights that go the distance, go back and do it all.”
Current unified lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez is set to fight George Kambosos on November 27. If he wins, he plans to move up to 140 pounds. In his absence, a number of fighters will battle for his vacant titles.
