Months after the two junior middleweight champions fought to a draw, Jermall Charlo and Brian Castaño have agreed to a rematch. Boxing insider Mike Coppinger reports that the two fighters will return to the ring for a second bout in February 2022 at the Toyota Center.
Charlo and Castaño’s mandatory challengers, Tim Tszyu and Bakhram Murtazaliev, will likely step aside for a fee.
Despite everything seemingly set in place, Castaño is still uncertain if Charlo will accept the fight. In the event that the fight falls through, he says he will move “on to the next fight.”
“I think … he will try to avoid [the rematch],” Castaño told ESPN.
“He will probably come up with something else. But in reality, it is me who is going to give him the rematch. If he doesn’t want it, OK. We move on to the next fight.”
His past and potential future opponent, Charlo, has slightly different feelings about what went down. While acknowledging Castaño’s toughness, the Texas native feels that he won the first fight and is not running from a rematch.
“I do believe I won the fight; I don’t believe it was that close,” Charlo countered.
“I should be undisputed right now.”
Their dispute will be settled this February in Houston, Texas.
