Davis, a native of Norfolk, Virgnia, enters the ring as the WBO’s top-ranked lightweight contender with a record of 12-0 with eight knockouts. Most recently, the 2020 Summer Olympic Games silver medalist stopped former 140-pound contender Gustavo Lemos in two round at the Scope Arena in Norfolk. Now, he will make the next jump in his pro campaign and challenge for his first world title.
“This is the opportunity I’ve been waiting for. Denys Berinchyk called me out, and I answered,” Davis said. “A new era in the lightweight division begins on February 14th. Be there in person or watch it live on ESPN because what I’m going to do must be seen to be believed.”
In order to become world champion, Davis must get by newly-crowned titleholder Denys Berinchyk. The Ukranian fighter beat Emmanuel Navarrete by split decision at Pechanga Arena in San Diego, California hours after his former teammate, Oleksandr Usyk, became undisputed heavyweight champion, cementing the greatest day in the European nation’s boxing history. Now, he will make his way to the world’s most famous arena and take on one of boxing’s fastest rising phenoms.
“I’m not going to make any big statements or shower my opponent with compliments,” Berinchyk said. “I’ll just say one thing: Don’t relax, dude! It won’t be an easy fight for you!”
Before Davis challenges for the world title, several of Top Rank’s most prized signees will step into the ring, including Xander Zayas, Jared Anderson, Delante “Tiger” Johnson, Vito “White Magic” Mielnicki Jr. and Rohan Polanco. All undercard bouts will be featured on ESPN+ before the main broadcast shifts to ESPN.
