As a color, blue is often associated with peace and tranquility. As an emotion or a genre of music, the Blues are often used to describe heartache and pain. In Kayla Rae’s newest single, she turns the Blues into blue with help of Grammy-winning duo Stargate.
While Valentine’s Day may be quickly approaching, Colorado Springs native Kayla Rae finds herself battling a gumbo of emotions. Floating over the subtle, yet hypnotic production from Stargate, she not only is broken down by a tough breakup, but her heartache is accentuated by the fact her former lover is now in love with someone else.
“I ain’t really been myself ever since you have been away. I heard that your new lil’ friend Is tryna take my place. Inhale feeling hazy. You got me talking crazy. Yeah, I have been getting wavy,” she sings.
The funny thing about heartache is that is typically temporary and when you’re a talented artist with a lot to look forward to it, it’s hard for someone to keep you down. Making her way through this journey of emotions, she punctuates the single by finding empowerment through her breakup.
“Look at what you have done to me. [I’m on my] bad girl sh*t. F*ck away the memories. [I’m on my] bad girl sh*t. [I’m] living out a fantasy,” she says.
Adding to her Stargate-produced single, rising talent has also tapped in with director Daniel Choi for cinematic visual that bridges the gap between today’s music video landscape and the 90s R&B videos that we all love. Check out the single and visual below.
