The Kawhi Leonard and San Antonio Spurs saga rages on into the heat of the summer. Although players around the league have made their moves to new teams, Leonard still sits on the same team that he suited up for less than 10 times last season. The disconnect from the two sides has been there for a long time and goes deeper than what we originally thought.
Leonard notably left the Spurs to do a rehab stint in New York. He left San Antonio to be with his ‘group’ and his doctors as he apparently wanted to mount a comeback to the team. But the season came and went and Kawhi wasn’t anywhere to be seen. He wasn’t on the Spurs bench during the playoffs and when the team sent officials to New York to check up on his rehab, he also wasn’t seen in New York because his representatives were allegedly hiding him from the team.
Mike C. Wright of ESPN was a guest on the ‘Back to Back’ Podcast on the ‘Count the Dings’ Network. On Thursday’s ‘Nerder She Wrote’ show, Wright talked about Leonard essentially playing hide and seek with members of the Spurs staff in New York.
“There was a point during [Kawhi’s] rehab process in New York that some of the Spurs brass went out to see him in New York. As soon as those guys arrived to the building, Kawhi’s people grabbed him and sequestered him to another part of the building. And so the Spurs’ people couldn’t even see him.
” … These are the types of things that are going on that people don’t necessarily know about.”
