When a film cost an estimated $300 million to make, you’re expecting a return that warranted that type of initial spending. This weekend, Justice League did exactly the opposite. The film only managed to bring in $96 million in its opening frame domestically. While the film did fair better internationally, I highly doubt Warner Brothers planned for this film to follow the Transformers path to profitability. And honestly, it’s still up in the air whether or not it can even do that. The film was not as savagely ripped to shreds by critics as ‘Suicide Squad‘ or ‘Batman V Superman’, but that’s hardly a compliment. One has to wonder whether or not Warner is going to consider scrapping the whole DCEU project after what was supposed to be the biggest film in their arsenal landed dead on arrival.
‘Wonder’ starring Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson and Jacob Tremblay finished in the second spot with an impressive $27.05 million at the weekend box office. This is a very small film that many expected to be gobbled up by Justice League and the staying power of ‘Thor: Ragnarok’, but the little film that could ultimately prevailed. In the third spot, the aforementioned ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ added an additional $21.7 million to its coffers domestically. The films overall box office now sit’s at $738 million worldwide. Which is already over $100 million more than the last ‘Thor’ film brought in during its entire run. ‘Daddy’s Home 2’ landed in the fourth spot by adding an additional $14.8 million to its overall haul. Surprisingly, the film carried a pretty steep budget of over $69 million, so the prospects of the film becoming profitable are looking fairly bleak. ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ rounded out the top 5 by bringing in an additional $13.8 million.
