Weeks after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, President Joe Biden signed an executive order that his administration believes will preserve abortion rights for Americans. Among other things, the order will help set up mobile clinics near the borders of states restricting abortion access. The order will also enlist pro bono lawyers to offer support to people crossing state lines to get an abortion.
“Today, I signed an executive order to protect the reproductive rights of women in the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s extreme decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. It formalizes the actions I announced right after the decision and will add new measures to protect women’s health,” Biden tweeted.
While the executive order is seemingly a step toward reinstating abortion access across the country, the President maintains that the best long-term solution lies within the U.S. Senate. The U.S. Senate has the ability to codify Roe v. Wade into law, but opposition from several conservative lawmakers has stalled the advancement of these efforts. As a result, Biden and his Democratic colleagues are once again laying a challenge at the feet of voters.
“The fastest way to restore Roe is to pass a national law codifying Roe, which I will sign immediately upon its passage. We need two additional pro-choice senators and a pro-choice House to codify Roe as federal law,” the President tweeted.
“Your vote can make that a reality.”
