So it seems like those theories about Joker revolving around a Cult of the Joker are a lot less crazy now.
In the final trailer for Todd Phillip’s Joker movie, fans finally got some more plot details. And it looks like Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck may be aiming to start a criminal cult in the upcoming film. Mobs of people wearing clown masks are featured throughout the trailer with Fleck seemingly leading them. This trailer definitely gives us a much different picture of Fleck than the meek, empathetic character seen in the first few trailers
We also got a better look at both Zasie Beetz’ and Robert De Niro’s characters. Beetz looks to be playing a love interest of sorts for Phoenix as there is a shot of them kissing but, something feels off about it. One of the few empathetic moments we do get from Fleck in the trailer comes courtesy of De Niro’s late-night host, Murray Franklin. A video of Fleck doing stand-up gets mocked on air by Franklin as Fleck watches from a hospital room, presumably his mother’s.
Perhaps the most unsettling yet, this latest trailer teases a dark, uncomfortable film in line with it’s recently announced R rating. Even just the short two and a half minutes on display here already have my stomach churning with anxiety honestly. And apparently, according to those CinemaCon reactions, the film delievrs on that and then some.
