Notre Dame Fighting Irish guard JJ Starling has announced that he will enter the transfer portal and play for another program next season. With the announcement that Head Coach Mike Brey will not return to the program next year, it was expected that the program would lose some players to the transfer portal. The former five-star recruit should be one of the top players this offseason in the transfer portal. He will likely not be the final player that announces their intention to transfer away from the program, but that could depend on the program’s next hire at Head Coach.

This season with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, JJ Starling averaged 11.2 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game. He paired those numbers with a field goal percentage of 42.1 percent and a three-point percentage of 29.9 percent. When he committed to Notre Dame, Starling was likely hoping he would be able to play his way into 2023 NBA Draft conversations. That did not happen this year and now he will look for a new program this offseason.
The transfer portal provides an opportunity for players to get a fresh start and is especially valuable for players in programs that have a coaching change. JJ Starling will look at his options during the offseason and play college basketball somewhere else next season.
