More than two weeks ago, the office of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg charged former President Donald Trump with 34 felonies tied to his alleged involvement in a hush money scheme. The former President not guilty to all charges levied against him as he prepares to begin a separate civil trial in which he is accused of raping former columnist E. Jean Carroll. As the former President sorts out his various legal matters, his former colleagues on Capitol Hill have made their way to his home state of New York.
On Monday, members of Congress participated in the “Victims of Violent Crime in Manhattan” hearing. Led by the Republican-controlled House Judiciary Committee, the session was held close by the office of district attorney Bragg, who has been investigated by Republican lawmakers for months. During the hearing, Rep. Jerry Nadler of New York raised issue with House Judiciary Committee Chairperson and his decision to hold the hearing in New York weeks after Trump was formally indicted. Among other things, Nadler said that Jordan was “doing the bidding of Donald Trump.”
“We are here today in lower Manhattan for one reason and one reason only: the chairman is doing the bidding of Donald Trump,” Nadler said.
“Committee Republicans designed this hearing to intimidate and deter the duly-elected district attorney of Manhattan from doing the work his constituents elected him to do.”
In addition to accusing his colleague of doing the former President’s bidding, he accused Republicans of using their roles in government to unnecessarily investigate Bragg.
“They are using their public offices and the resources of this committee to protect their political patron, Donald Trump,” Nadler continued.
“It is an outrageous abuse of power.”
