Florida Governor Ron DeSantis raised the eyebrows of several reporters when he spoke to press on Monday. DeSantis floated the idea of building a prison on the plot of land next to Walt Disney World.
“If you look at this whole special district, Walt Disney Corporation obviously owns a lot of it, but the district owns other land,” he said at a press conference, according to The Hill.
“Now people are like, what should we do with this land? People have said: Maybe create a state park, maybe try to do more amusement parks. Someone even said maybe you need another state prison. Who knows?”
The Florida Governor has been at odds with Disney for some time now. Their dispute seemingly began when the company publicly raised issues with the governor’s plan to restrict conversations regarding gender identity and sexuality in public school classrooms. Shortly thereafter, DeSantis signed a bill that eliminated the private government that oversaw Walt Disney World in the state. However, members of the board that previously oversaw the district in which Disney resides signed a bill that gives the company developmental authority over its theme park. In short, the incoming board of DeSantis’ appointees were left without power over the company. Moving forward, DeSantis will look to overturn the agreement.
The state of Florida still owns a plot of land next to the world-renowned theme park. DeSantis hadn’t previously spoken about building on the plot of land, but it appears he will do so moving forward.
“I just think that the possibilities are endless,” DeSantis said, according to The Hill.
“So that is now gonna be analyzed to see what would make the most sense. And that wasn’t necessarily even on the radar.”
