Thanks to a cap number that fell below the projections going into the offseason, the Celtics were unable to sign Hayward outright and now will have to ship a player out of town to clear some to bring him into their salary. Avery Bradley and Marcus Smart were among the names considered but it will be Jae Crowder who is reportedly being dealt.

Interestingly enough, Hayward was the subject of cheers from Boston faithful during the season and that sparked a response from Jae Crowder. He felt slighted that the Boston fans would cheer for Hayward on their TD Garden floor a long time before he even made his free agency decision. Now they could be traded for each other and the Celtics fans will get their wish but Crowder won’t be around to see it.
