In recent years, a number of musical acts have talked the talk about injecting social justice into their music. However, a few have broken the mold and done so. Jay-Z and Meek Mill have made efforts to make their voices heard in the fight for prison reform. Chance The Rapper has been working to build up his communities in Chicago. Killer Mike and T.I. have done major work in promoting Black businesses. Most notably, Nipsey Hussle worked tirelessly to improve STEM education, re-entry programs and financial education in his neighborhoods. One artist who is working hard as an activist and a musician is Jamila Woods.
Based in the Windy City, this Brown University graduate has worked as the Associate Artistic Director for the Young Chicago Authors program that works to uplift youth voices in underprivileged communities. In addition, she’s worked to help organize Louder Than A Bomb. Not to mention, she conducts workshops and programs for young people in the Chicago Public School systems.
On the music side, she’s just as dedicated and successful. During her career, Woods has worked with everyone from Chance The Rapper to Macklemore. Now, she’s back with her sophomore album, Legacy! Legacy! Woods’ newest project comes with features from Saba, Nitty Scott, theMind and more. Check out the latest project from Jamila Woods and let us know what you think.
