Unfortunately, January 9, 2022 has been a day filled with loss. Earlier today, millions mourned the deaths of actor Bob Saget and Woodstock Co-Creator Michael Lang. Now, millions are also mourning the loss of legendary musician James Mtume.
Many know Mtume for his work on “Juicy Fruit,” a popular track that was later sampled on Notorious B.I.G’s “Juicy” in 1994. However, his legacy is much bigger than one song or sample.
He led his own R&B group, produced tracks like “You, Me & He” and worked with the legendary jazz musician Miles Davis. Not to mention, he was the composer behind “The Closer I Get To You” by Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway.
“I am saddened to hear of the passing of my dear friend and producer James Mtume. He was so brilliant and an amazing music mind. The work chemistry we had was second to none. I will continue to lift you up through our music,” Stephanie Mills tweeted.
“Rest In Peace to the legendary James Mtume. Thank you for sharing your tremendous gifts with us for so long,” Dr. Marc Lamont Hill added.
Mtume is survived by his son, Fa. He was 76 years old.
